Purpose

The Building Façade Improvement Program supports the long-term viability of existing businesses and improves the marketability of vacant commercial properties within the Town of Pictou. This pilot initiative promotes storefront revitalization, with particular emphasis on quality signage and enhanced curb appeal.

Policy Statement

The program provides financial assistance to eligible commercial property owners and tenants undertaking exterior improvements visible from public streets. The objective is to encourage private investment, strengthen the appearance of the downtown and waterfront areas, and support economic development, tourism, and business retention.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Commercial property owners and commercial tenants within the Town of Pictou are eligible.
  • All taxes, water accounts, and municipal obligations must be current.
  • One application per commercial unit per year.
  • Applications must be approved before work begins.
  • No retroactive funding will be provided.
  • Funding is based on a 50% cost-share to a maximum of $500 (excluding HST).
  • Minimum grant value is $100.
  • Projects must be completed within twelve (12) months of approval.
  • All work must comply with applicable by-laws and permit requirements.
  • Improvements must be permanent in nature.

Application and Approval Process

Applicants must submit a completed application, project description, and at least one estimate prior to commencing work. Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. The Façade Committee will review applications and may inspect completed projects prior to reimbursement.

Eligible Improvements

  • New signage or improvements to existing signage
  • Canopies and awnings
  • Façade repainting, cleaning, or refinishing
  • Repair or replacement of architectural details
  • Masonry, brickwork, and wood restoration
  • Storefront window replacement or repair
  • Entranceway and accessibility improvements
  • Storefront redesign and reconstruction
  • Exterior storefront lighting
  • Restoration of historic features
  • Physical flower planters or beautification features (soil and plantings are not eligible)

Signage Guidelines

Signage should complement the architectural character of the Town of Pictou and align with the Town’s wayfinding objectives. Backlit signs are not eligible. All signage must comply with the Town of Pictou Land Use By-law and should consist of high-quality fascia, awning, or projecting signs. Program Launch

Applications will be available beginning July 9, 2026, and will be reviewed on a first come first served basis.

Submission Deadline

Applications will be received until budget allocation for 2026-27 is committed. Total budget allocated this fiscal year is $5,000.

Process
Once your application has been approved and the project has commenced, reimbursement for the approved funding amount will be provided upon receipt of copies of the applicable invoices.
