A Message from the Police Advisory
We’re excited to bring you a fresh outlook from The Town of Pictou’s Police Advisory Board (PAB). We hope this message finds you well and engaged in our community!
What Exactly is the Police Advisory Board?
The Police Advisory Board is a dedicated team of volunteers from our community who meet every 3 months with the RCMP to chat about public safety and how we can make our town even better. It’s one of the many ways police agencies connect with the communities they serve.
While the PAB mainly offers advice and recommendations, remember that these suggestions aren’t binding. The members of the PAB devote their time for free because they care about our community, and we appreciate every hour they put in!
What Do We Do? Here’s a Quick Rundown of Our Roles:
1. Bridging the Gap: We aim to provide a solid platform for residents to express their opinions and concerns. Our PAB helps ensure that the community's voice is heard, especially when direct communication with the police isn’t always possible. We’re also here to share accurate information during crises, helping to foster trust between the police and the public.
2. Sounding Board for Police Leadership: The PAB often assists the RCMP by weighing in on various policies and practices. Whether it’s in response to a controversial incident or potential policy changes, we provide honest feedback and support to ensure informed decision-making.
3. Facilitating Community Events: We help spread the word about police initiatives and community events, promoting engagement and building lasting relationships. Strong connections make all the difference in reinforcing community trust and participation.
Highlights from May to August 2024:
- We’ve successfully requested more proactive patrols, particularly around school zones and recreational locations! Keep an eye out for our friendly officers!
- Our "Touch a Truck" event at the Exhibition Grounds was a hit, with funds raised for a new splash pad that everyone can enjoy.
- Big shoutout to the RCMP for having members join the Lobster Carnival Parade this year; it was fantastic to see our officers out there!
- The RCMP crew is now equipped with a new police boat, and they’ve been busy training out in the Pictou Harbour. They also participated in the lobster boat races to celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Pictou Lobster Carnival—what an exciting time!
- We urge everyone to watch over pets, especially during warm weather. Avoid leaving animals in vehicles, as heat can be dangerous for them.
- Checkpoints have proven effective this summer, with more planned as we approach the holiday season—stay alert!
- We’ve noticed an increase in various incidents, including disturbing the peace, mental health concerns, and break and enters. Together, let’s remain vigilant and support one another.
A Couple of Key Reminders:
- If you see anything suspicious or have health and safety concerns, don’t hesitate to call the RCMP. Your input is invaluable!
- Remember to secure your vehicles and homes. Consider investing in a security system for additional protection.
Information Update:
We realize that our "From the Cruiser" updates haven’t been shared since June 2022. We’re working on bringing you those monthly updates from the RCMP moving forward!
For any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to the PAB committee. Your feedback is vital, and we’re here to listen!
Stay safe and engaged, Pictou! Together, we can make our town a better place.
