Pictou County is part of the Chignecto Central Regional School Board and the County's 24 schools fall under the Celtic family of schools. Construction was completed on two new enhanced high schools in the fall of 2003.

The Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) Pictou Campus, is a post-secondary institution committed to serving the needs of students by offering training, education and the opportunity for lifelong learning. The college is pro-active in that it plays a major role in response to the economic development strategies of the province within a Canadian and global economy. The NSCC has a total of 14 campuses throughout the province.

The NSCC Pictou Campus provides pre-employment training to the second largest manufacturing economy in Nova Scotia and specializes in the areas of Business, Technology, and Trades. The NSCC also provides an extensive upgrading and career advancement curriculum, designed to meet the needs of Pictou County residents seeking to upgrade their skills on a part-time basis. Pictou Campus has an enrollment of 625 full-time students and 750 part-time students. Pictou Campus has a long-standing "Training Partnership" with area industries such as Michelin Tire Canada Ltd. and Trenton Works Ltd, through customized training.

For residents of Pictou County, St. F.X. University is a commutable distance. St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, is located less than 45 minutes from Pictou County. It offers an extensive range of programs from Bachelor of Arts and Science degrees to Masters degrees in a wide variety of disciplines. It has a full time student population of almost 4,000. St. F.X. operates a university extension centre in Pictou County.
