Recreation Programs

On The Move With Pictou Recreation and Parks

It is important to be active throughout your life & becoming active is easier than you think. Discover all the different ways to incorporate physical activity into your daily life in Pictou. It can be as easy as walking the dog, a snowshoe hike with your friends or taking your grandchild to the playground. Pictou Recreation and Parks provides recreation programming for all ages and interests, as well as leadership in organizing special community events that foster community pride.   

Programs 2023-24

Chair Yoga with Rachael MacLean (8 weeks)

Chair Yoga is an uplifting program for all ages and abilities. This class will invite you to connect with breath and movement to improve your range of motion, flexibility and strength.  Fridays at 10:00 am (beginning Sept 20,2024) at the Pictou United Church Hall.   Pre-registration is required, contact the office to register 902-485-4372.  Cost: $70 for 8 weeks.

Yoga with Rachael MacLean (8 weeks)

Learn the fundamentals of yoga building strength, improve balance, increase flexibility, reduce stress and tension while building overall health. Tuesdays at 10:00 am (beginning Sept 17/24) and Wednesdays at 2:00 pm (beginning Sept 18/24) at the Pictou United Church Hall. Pre-registration is required, contact the office to register 902-485-4372.  Cost: $70 - once/wk or $130 - twice/week

Tai Chi with Greg Dickson (8 weeks)

Yang style Tai Chi for people of all ages who seek to improve their personal well-being, flexibility, core strength and balance. Combining various hand, body and foot movements along with the practical application of yin and yang, the Yang style teaches you to move the various parts of the body in soft, curved and circular ways. We will concentrate on the Standard Tai Chi 24 Form set to maintain the fundamentals while making it easier, especially for beginners to learn and master. Mondays at 10:00 am (beginning Sept. 9/24) at the Pictou United Church Hall.  Pre-registration is required, contact the office to register 902-485-4372.  Cost:  $70 for 8 weeks.

Photography Course (8 weeks)

Improve your photographic experience! This course is for anyone wanting to have a better understanding of the basics of photography. 
When: Tuesdays 7:00-9:00 pm beginning October 1/24  Location: CN Station, 71 Front St  
Fee: $85

Walk and Roll Program

The Nova Scotia Health Authority and Pictou Recreation and Parks will be offering a Walk N Roll Program again this fall. It is designed for those with mobility challenges. We welcome people of all mobility levels - bring any walking aid that you have. Walkers available as well. Our goals are to increase your walking endurance, heart health and independence. Enjoy companionship and music while improving your fitness level. It will take place once a week in Pictou and it’s FREE! For more information call 902-485-4372

Drop-In Programs

Adult Badminton Club

Tuesdays 6:30-8:30 pm. Location: McCulloch Education Centre, 350 Wellington St, Start date and fees TBA.  Bring your own racket.
When there is no school (inservices, weather or holidays) there is no Badminton.

Adult Pickleball

Every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings at 6:30-8:30 pm at McCulloch Education Centre gym during the fall, winter and spring.  Start date: TBA Drop In Fee: $3.00/night. 
PLEASE NOTE:  When there is no school (inservices, weather or holidays) there is no Pickleball.  

During the summer pickleball is held at the Tennis Courts on Thursdays from 6-8 pm and Saturdays from 9-12 noon.    Membership Fee:  $45/person  or $60/family and can be purchased at the Town Office.

 

Summer Day Camp Program

Registration Opens June 2024

Pictou Recreation and Parks offer day camps for children throughout July and August. Camps are open to children ages 5 to 11 years old. Campers must bring their own lunch, snacks, water and sun protection, including a hat and sunscreen. Comfortable walking shoes/sneakers are necessary. The day camps are held at Broidy Park, Monday through Friday with trip days being held on Thursdays. Drop off will be at Broidy Park at 9:00 am and pick-up will be at the Broidy Park at 4:00 pm, except for trip days when locations and times vary according to the individual trip. Registration fee includes day trip expenses. Please note that all camp programs are nut-free.

Junior Leader Program

Are you a teen looking for valuable volunteer experience? Come and join the Pictou Recreation and Parks Junior Leader Program! We are committed to investing in our youth. Responsibilities include 1-day leadership training, supervising summer day camp participants ages 6-11 years and helping with the preparation of crafts and activities. Equipment Loan Program

Go PlayPictou County offers a loan program for recreational equipment available by the various municipal units throughout the county. If there is a piece of equipment that you would enjoy, simply fill out the survey and the appropriate person will be in contact with you. Types of equipment you can borrow include: a kit bag full of outdoor recreation equipment for entertaining family and friends, canoe, paddleboards, kayaks, bikes, snowshoes, nordic walking poles, sport wheelchairs, washer toss games, floor hockey equipment, tennis rackets, roller blades, flag football and baseball kit with bats, helmets, catchers equipment, and balls.

Discover our PLAY BOX, new in Veterans Drive Playground; a box of outdoor games and fun that you can use at your own leisure. Fun for families, friends and on your own!

Fire Inspection

Fire Inspectors, which municipalities are required to have according to the Fire Safety Act of Nova Scotia, carry out inspections on the following:

  • Assembly occupancies - churches, community halls, licensed establishments, restaurants, theatres, arenas, gyms, museums, etc.
  • Residential occupancies containing 4 or more dwelling units - apartments, motels, etc.
  • Business and personal service occupancies - offices, banks, and service shops
  • Mercantile occupancies - stores, markets, and retail outlets
  • Industrial occupancies - workshops, factories, warehouses, repair garages, gas stations, etc.

The Fire Inspector ensures that these occupancies are complying with the National Fire Code of Canada and provides information on fire safety and fire emergency planning. If you need an inspection, please contact the Deputy Clerk to make arrangements to speak with the Fire Inspector at 902-934-1061.

Recreation and Parks

The Town of Pictou is a Registered HIGH FIVE® Organization

parkPictou Recreation and Parks is responsible for the operational management of the Pictou Fisheries Training Pool, Broidy Park, as well as two other Town owned parks, the Jitney Trail and four-sport fields including supporting facilities. Pictou Recreation and Parks also coordinates recreational programs, such as swimming lessons, water safety, summer day camps, and youth activity programs. Throughout the year, Pictou Recreation and Parks organize special interest programs such as photography, art, fitness classes and walking programs.

Department activities also include communications for the Town of Pictou. Managing the website and social media and coordinating community events such as Canada Day, Natal Day, Christmas Light-up, Volunteer Banquet, the Summer Musical Showcase, and assisting with occasional special events. As well, cruise development at the Port of Pictou falls under the umbrella of the Pictou Recreation and Parks staff and the Public Works department. 

The Pictou Recreation and Parks mission is to achieve acceptable results in the following areas by providing advice, assistance, utilizing community assets and partnerships, and by providing direct programs, services and facilities.

Funding and Financial Support

For community groups, locating funds in order to enhance programs or subsidize the costs of participation to the users is sometimes a challenge. There are a variety of organizations that offer funding and financial support for recreation activities and sports programs.

Active Pictou County

The purpose of this cooperative partnership amongst four municipalities in Pictou County, is to educate and motivate all citizens to increase their daily physical activity in an effort to create a happier, healthier and active community. Storage Lockers for Canoes, Kayaks and Paddle Boards

There are storage lockers located on the Pictou Waterfront at the Marina. If you are looking for convenient storage for your small, recreational watercraft near a launch ramp; please call Pictou Recreation and Parks at 902-485-4372.
